Fruit

The municipality of Slovenska Bistrica has a great climate for fruit growing, which has always been a very important part of local people´s lives. The first orchards were planted as early as the beginning of the 20th century. With the introduction of the first intensive orchard system in the 1960´s, the region experienced a resurrection of fruit growing. Most of the orchards are devoted to apple trees, while chestnuts, walnuts and pears are also grown. Producers have adopted integrated fruit production systems, and some have even introduced ecological methods, which are another step forward in terms of quality. Fruit growing has traditionally been very strong in the villages of Vrhole and Preloge, where excellent fresh and dried fruit, apple juice, home-made vinegar, apple wine and other delicacies can be sampled.
