The church was first mentioned as a town church in 1379. Its bell tower was originally used as a town tower and was lower. The church was renovated between 1652 and 1685; it hasn´t changed much since then, apart from the presbytery, which was shortened in 1941 by the Germans in order to widen the road. The Baroque style of the church nicely complements the appearance of the main town square.
