Church of St. Martin
The village of Šmartno na Pohorju, where artifacts reaching as far back as Roman times have been found, is home to the Church of St. Martin, which had been built in the first half of the 13th century and hasn´t been altered much since then. The church contains Roman tombstones, and the equipment is from the Baroque period. Roman frescoes were discovered in the church several years ago, making it the most important Roman monument in Slovenia.
Since 2007, Šmartno na Pohorju also bears the Footprint of St. Martin, as the village is part of the Saint Martin of Tours European cultural route, which connects countries from Hungary all the way to France. Part of this route will take you from the Slovenska Bistrica Castle, through the Castle Park and the Bistrica Gorge, and all the way to Šmartno na Pohorju, providing a lovely day of hiking.
