Rangoon, Burma, 1917. Edward, a Britich colonial official, flees his fiancee Molly on the day of their wedding and sets off on a journey into the unknown. His travels take him to Singapore, Bangkok, and China, but soon his mood is overshadowed by melancholy. As cowardly Edwaed wonders what has become of Molly, he begins to realize the emptiness of his own existence. Molly does not give up so easily, and follows in his footsteps.
